Windmill Lecture

Wed 27 Sep 17

The Ashbys – Brixton’s millers 1816-1934

The topic of our second annual Windmill Lecture is the history of the Ashby family. The speaker will be Viv Whittingham, a direct descendant of John Ashby, the first miller at Brixton Hill.

Viv will explore how this Quaker family managed to produce and sell stoneground flour from the Brixton Hill site in the face of rapid urbanisation of the area and fierce competition from the roller mills constructed in all the main ports that produced flour on an industrial scale.

Remarkably, Ashby & Sons adapted in this challenging climate to keep trading right up to 1934. Come along to discover how they managed to survive.
