We currently do not have a permanent education officer at Brixton Windmill but we hope to resume our education projects in the near future.

Hands On Windmill Gardens!

A collaborative community mural project

Hands On Windmill Gardens was a collaborative community project led that took place at Windmill Gardens in Brixton from November 2012 until May 2013.  The outcome of the project was to create a 31 metre-long mural that would brighten up and improve the look of the playground that sits in the shadow of Brixton Windmill.  The mural was designed so that visitors to the park could engage with the story of the windmill’s history and the story of the Ashby family, who were the millers at the site throughout its working life. 

Local artist Camila Cardenosa worked closely with our Education Programme to design a series of creative workshops for local people – school children, local residents, members of Friends of Windmill Gardens and residents of Windmill Lodge Care Home.  Through a range of visual arts and creative writing activities, workshop participants produced the content for the mural.  This content included images of how we imagined the various generations of the Ashby family would have looked and dressed, images relating to the schools programme workshops that take place at the windmill, and poetry, writing and phrases that relate to Brixton Windmill, milling in general and the history of technology in Britain.  In total, 245 people participated in these design workshops.

Throughout April, the community of Brixton was invited to come to Windmill Gardens and assist in the painting of the mural.  By night, computer projections were used to outline the design on the wall, and by day visitors, including those that had participated in the workshops, residents of Brixton Prison, people living locally and parents and children who regularly use the playground, were invited to pick up a brush and make their mark on Windmill Gardens.  Two hundred people helped us to paint the mural, working twelve hours a day, seven days a week over five weeks to complete the huge artwork.

We consulted with local businesses throughout the project and received very generous support from those who could envisage the difference that this project would make to the park.  Mears, a repairs and maintenance provider for social housing, rendered the wall before painting began.  They also provided apprentices to help with the painting, and have provided an anti-vandal coating to cover the painting.  Veolia Environmental Services donated all of the paint and brushes we required, while the Old Post Office Bakery supplied lunch for the painters throughout the project. 

We celebrated the official opening of the mural on May 6th 2013.  A blog was created to document the progress of the project, and contains films and photographs outlining all of the activities during the project.  The blog can be viewed at

Using Your Loaf!

Working with Sudbourne School 2012/13

Throughout the school year of 2012-13 Sundbourne School in Brixton used the whole-school curriculum theme 'Using Your Loaf' to enhance and inspire their lessons.

During the year the school worked on many creative activities related to the theme, and even grew their own wheat in the grounds of the school!  The teachers also worked closely with Brixton Windmill on a number of actvities, with most students at the school paying a visit to the windmill during the year.

Three class groups played an important part in the Hands On Mural Project when they decorated large letters with beautiful images relating to Brixton Windmill.  These drawings were used to design whole alphabets that appear in the final mural design.

At the end of the year, the school took part in Friends of Windmill Gardens' annual parade with their very own float.  The school's talented steel pan band entertained the crowds while more students added a splash of colour with their fantastic costumes and dance routines.
